The Bunker Pituba, Salvador, Bahia. Foto: Amanda Oliveira.

Hops, malt, yeast and water. These are the four basic ingredients of the beverage that is more than 6,000 years old: the beer! National preference, this drink is believed to have arisen from a bread recipe that went wrong in Mesopotamia. The next big thing is the craft beers, with their own recipes, ranging from bitter flavors to flavors with fruit notes.

In Salvador, the brewing movement is growing and this is one of those perfect itineraries for beer lovers. There are places that bring together experts and lay people alike. In addition to understanding that beer should be chosen through the taste of each person, beginners also learn which beer best matches each dish. Here we will give you tips on 5 amazing places to have a good beer and better understand the beer culture of Salvador. In addition, we show events that combine good music and beer in the same place.

Proa Bar

Bar da Proa. Pituba Salvador Bahia. Foto: Amanda Oliveira.

You have certainly seen this beer in many establishments around the city. Proa is in approximately 80 Bahian establishments and in Salvador you will find it in many restaurants and bars. But the cool thing is that they just opened a sensational bar in Pituba, a Proa embassy, to inspire the Soteropolitan public to challenge their taste buds and get to know different craft beers.

The place was created to promote Proa’s beers and the Bahian public craft spirit. There are 15 taps with seasonal and other exclusive Proa line beers, creations of brewer master and Proa’s owner, Deborah Lehnen, that go against the tide of sameness. On the tap there is also a house gin. Proa Salvador has in its structure a unit of Cozi, forneria of typical Neapolitan pizzas harmonized with the beers served.

The labels flagship is Carrie Nation (American IPA). Also worth trying is Vienna Lager, a coppery beer with reddish hues, a clear malt flavor reminiscent of lightly toasted bread. One that is super-special is Fruit Beer, made of jackfruit. Exotic and tropical, its label was made with a print in partnership with designers from Meninos Rei Bahian brand. An unusual experience for your taste buds. But this was a limited edition, we hope it will return.

Chopp Shop Artesanais: Beers for all tastes

Chopp Shop. Graça Salvador Bahia. Foto: Amanda Oliveira.

The Chopp Shop is a stylish bar featuring ten beer taps from Bahia, Brazil and around the world. The chalk wall facing the counter says: On Tap! This is where you will identify a list of options available on the menu, numbered one through ten, with the alcohol percentage, bitterness, and cost of each. Some are more refreshing, others more eccentric. Ale, Sour, Bock, Wess, Larger, IPA and APA beers. There are beers for all tastes. The really difficult part is to choose from so many options.

One that draws attention is the Sorachi Berliner: a German-origin style that values the hops sensory profile, originally developed in Japan, with aromas of lemon and lemongrass with Sicilian lemon peels and a fruity citrus profile. Ris Barrealanged (Potus), Acapulco Hop Lager (Stern) and Piveta American Ipa (Amada) are also excellent choices.

When you get hungry, only the appetizer menu can save you! Mini pizzas served on a wooden board, Argentinian empanadas of many flavors, flaky pastry burgers and the famous German sausage are ideal accompaniments for happy hour. Chopp Shop’s decor is something else. Walls completely covered by classic beer-themed posters give the space a super modern tone.
