It’s no news that Salvador has several attractions that delight locals and tourists. The city is full of history, ancestry and musicality, with several places (some hidden, others more popular) that are worth knowing or going to more than once. Since the capital is big and full of beauties, nothing better than using a Sunday – better known as the day of laziness, of staying at home and watching movies – to make a nice schedule full of beauty.

1. Parque da Cidade Joventino Silva
Located in the Itaigara neighborhood and opened in 1975, Parque da Cidade preserves a significant remnant of the Atlantic Forest and restinga in an area of 724,000 square meters. It is also the only place in the city where you can find several ornamental and fruitful species, due to the transition from the Atlantic Forest to the dunes. The site has a bike path, a space for graffiti workshop, a slackline circuit, soccer and volleyball courts, as well as integrative playgrounds.

2. Parque dos Ventos
Parque dos Ventos is located in front of the sea and has several attractions, for those who like adventure and for those who enjoy a picnic. The site has a structure ten meters high for rappelling and climbing activities, a skate street track, a three-kilometer bike path, as well as a pump track, which is a cycle track with a continuous circuit with speed bumps, rounded earth hills, gently sloping curves and a place dedicated exclusively to the practice of parkour. In addition, the equipment has a playground with toys adapted for people with disabilities, basketball hoops, volleyball court, area for contemplation and picnic, amphitheater with capacity between 100 and 150 people, natural slides, kiosks, skating area, promenade for walking and restrooms. The structure is very complete and offers a range of options for a perfect day.

3. Parque Lagoa dos Dinossauros
A park unlike any other in Salvador, the place has replicas of Velociraptor, Dilophosaurus, Brachiosaurus and much more. The visitor will have the feeling of having gone back in time in front of life-size sculptures, such as the Tyrannosaurus Rex, which is approximately five meters high and nine meters long. The replicas emit sound, as people approach, through a presence sensor and the use of an app. The park is located at Lagoa dos Frades, in the Stiep neighborhood, close to the old Convention Center.

4. Museu do Mar Aleixo Belov (Museum of the Sea)
For those who like the sea and the stories that surround it, this museum is the most suitable. The creation of the Museu do Mar Aleixo Belov is linked to the maritime adventures of the sailor that gives it its name. Aleixo Belov has traveled the world countless times on a sailboat, on boats he worked on and on his own sailboats, built entirely by him. The result of these trips can be seen in the books he wrote, the images he captured and the objects he won, traded, found and bought, in every port and region he visited. All these two- and three-dimensional objects are on display in this museum, which is part of the lone navigator’s dream come true. The most famous item on display is the original Três Marias sailboat.

05. Casa do Carnaval da Bahia (Carnival House)
Casa do Carnaval da Bahia is the museum that tells, in a playful and interactive way, the story of the biggest street carnival in the world, the Carnival of Salvador. The place has four floors: the ground floor, the first floor, the terrace, and the basement, with models, clothes and instruments loaned by artists of the party, photos and historical documents and two cinemas where visitors can learn the rhythms of the party characterized and with the help of monitors. Several video projections are also part of the collection (each visitor makes its own “journey” through the house, using headphones).
06. Museu Náutico da Bahia (Nautical Museum)
This is another option for sea and history lovers. One of the most famous sights in Salvador is Barra Lighthouse, but not many people know that the lighthouse houses the Nautical Museum of Bahia. The site brings together a valuable collection of underwater archaeological finds, a collection of navigation instruments and nautical signaling, models, vessels miniatures of various origins and a permanent exhibition on the geography, history, anthropology and culture of the All Saints Bay.

07. Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (Museum of Modern Art of Bahia) – MAM-BA
The Museum of Modern Art of Bahia (MAM-BA) is considered the main space for contemporary art in the state and one of the most important in the country, where an audience of approximately 200,000 people passes per year. Exhibitions by established visual artists from Brazil and abroad move the museum’s five exhibition rooms. The place also has an outdoor gallery (Parque das Esculturas) and a movie theater, in addition to hosting cultural artistic events of different languages. The museum has a permanent program of educational actions.
MAM-Bahia promotes guided tours, as long as they are pre-scheduled, for groups of up to 35 people in the morning, always on Thursdays (except holidays), from 10 am to 12 pm, when the museum is less busy because it is closed to the general public. 08. Palacete das Artes (Rodin Bahia Museum)
Palacete das Artes was the home of Commander Bernardo Martins Catharino. In the Mario Cravo Jr Contemporary Room, the Palacete hosts temporary exhibitions by important artists in the visual arts scene of Bahia, Brazil and other countries, in addition to a shop and the Solar Café. In the gardens, in addition to centenary trees and diverse species of native flora, there are four bronze sculptures by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The Rodin Bahia Museum is located in the Mansion of Comendador Bernardo Martins Catharino. The first and second floors of the museum are dedicated to the collections of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin.

09. Cidade da Música da Bahia (City of Music of Bahia)
Do you want to immerse yourself in the universe of Bahian music? Visit the City of Music, an essential experience for anyone visiting the capital. Bahia was the stage for the creation of rhythms and cultural movements that marked generations, and the space celebrates the history of music from the founding of the city to the present day. The site has 1,914.76 m² of built area and four floors. The ground floor has an entrance hall, reception/ticket office, living room, café, shop, library, media library and research center.

10. Casa do Rio Vermelho (House of Rio Vermelho)
Casa do Rio Vermelho, also known as Casa de Jorge Amado, is the residence where the Bahian writer couple Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai lived. The place, which has now been turned into a memorial, housed Jorge and Zélia for 40 years, and during this period they collected many works of art, which are still on display on the walls. There are also more than 30 hours of audiovisual content about the couple. The visit is a unique and very special experience. In addition to the entire structure and exhibitions of the house, the feeling of peace conveyed by the gardens of the place is one of the great attractions.

11. Cine Metha – Glauber Rocha
For those who enjoy going to the movies on Sunday, here’s the perfect option! Glauber is a cinema, but not just any cinema. Located in the heart of the Historic Center of Salvador, Glauber is one of the few street cinemas in the country. It has a rich and centuries-old history. It is one of the most important cultural references in Bahia. Inaugurated in 1919, the cinema, in its most diverse phases, has never ceased to be a strong presence in the lives of people from Salvador. Cine Metha – Glauber Rocha has four rooms (630 seats) with the most modern projection equipment (it is one of the best designed projection rooms in the country), in addition to a bookstore, restaurant and café. A true cultural complex in the heart of the capital. And that’s not all, the prices are super affordable, with sessions starting at R$5.

12. Casa de Jorge Amado Foundation
The Casa de Jorge Amado Foundation was inaugurated on March 7, 1987 with the aim of preserving, studying and disseminating the work of the great novelist Jorge Amado and his wife, Zélia Gattai. Located in a 19th-century colonial property, in Largo do Pelourinho, Casa de Jorge Amado houses, on its four floors, a permanent exhibition of the writer’s collection, consisting of several editions of his novels, with translations in 49 languages. Also part of the collection are photographs, videos, posters and objects that relate to the author and his work, as well as archives of letters, manuscripts and various documents, available to researchers and scholars. The institution is considered a point of reference in the cultural geography of the city, holding courses, seminars, workshops, conference cycles, book launches, exhibitions and FLIPELÔ – Pelourinho International Literary Fair, one of the biggest literary events in Bahia.

13. Mercado Modelo (Model Market)
If you are visiting Salvador, be sure to visit the most famous market in the city: Mercado Modelo. The site is an important tourist attraction, facing the All Saints Bay, next door to the Lacerda Elevator and the Historic Center, and is visited by 80% of the tourists who come to Salvador. With 8,410 square meters and two floors, the municipal market houses 263 stores that offer the widest variety of handicrafts, gifts and souvenirs from Bahia, with two of the most traditional restaurants of Bahian cuisine: Maria de São Pedro, with eighty years of existence and the Cameo de Oxossi.

14. Memorial Casa Di Vina
The house where Vinícius de Moraes lived, one of the great icons of Brazilian culture, is located in Itapuã and functions as a memorial, hotel and restaurant. Vinicius moved to Itapuã in the early 1970s, experiencing a very inspired phase of his life there. Casa de Vina, as Vinicius’ friends nicknamed it, was frequented by countless artists and was the stronghold of his partnerships, the birthplace of famous songs and part of the vast and important work left by the poet. Memorial Casa di Vina is open to the public and free of charge. There, objects, photos and documents from the romantic history of the poet and the actress Gessy Gesse are on display, as well as the little-known passage of the artist through the capital. During the visit, old sculptures and tiles by the plastic artist Udo Knoff and the panel painted by Bel Borba in honor of Vinicius’ friendship with the painter Calasans Neto can also be appreciated.

15. Cinema do Museu Geológico (Geological Museum Cinema)
Although the Geological Museum is temporarily closed, the cinema that is on site is still working. The auditorium, inaugurated in 1985, houses, since 1996, the Cinema do Museu – one of the projection rooms for art films in Salvador. There are 125 places for the projection of educational films and scientific and cultural events. The environment is different from a conventional room and it’s also super-instagrammable.

16. Museu de Arte da Bahia (Museum of Art of Bahia)
The Museu de Arte da Bahia, created in 1918, is the oldest in the state. On the ground floor, there are maps and aspects of Salvador in the 17th century, at the time of the Dutch invasion, in 1624, as well as engravings that refer to a tour of the capital in the 19th century. On the upper floor, it is possible to discover the work of important Bahian names, such as Presciliano Silva, Alberto Valença and Mendonça Filho. The place is a class about Bahia for Bahians and tourists.

Close to the sea and the history of the city
17. Ponta de Humaitá
For lovers of a more than splendid view of the sea and the sunset, Ponta de Humaitá is a must-see attraction in Salvador. Surrounded by the sea of the All Saints Bay, the site is home to a small lighthouse and also the Church and Monastery of Monte Serrat, dating from the early 17th century. There is also a restaurant there, perfect for ordering a meal and watching the sun go down. Right next to Ponta de Humaitá is the Fort of Monte Serrat, a historic building from the 16th century that served as a defense for the city of Salvador in the colonial period. 18. Forte de Santa Maria (Fort of Santa Maria)
Fort of Santa Maria is located next to Porto da Barra beach, one of the most famous in Salvador. The fort was built in 1614, and its façade still displays the emblem of the Empire of Brazil. It was listed by the National Institute of Artistic and Historical Heritage (Iphan) in 1938 and is administered by the Navy. Since May 2016, it houses the Espaço Pierre Verger da Fotografia Baiana (Pierre Verger Space of Bahian Photography). The space also has the Mirante Forte Santa Maria Bistrô, which pleases the most diverse palates, with good cuisine and great options in cocktails.

19. Praia do MAM (MAM Beach)
This is a schedule you can do alone, with family or friends. It’s up to you. But the location is ideal for a more romantic program. The beach has super-crystalline and calm water, in addition to not always being crowded, perfect for spending a morning or an afternoon in peace and enjoying the view of the Museum of Modern Art – MAM, with a more than perfect sunset over the All Saints Bay. Before, access to the beach was done through the museum. Today, this is no longer allowed, so the beach tends to be less crowded. The option is to get off at Praia da Gamboa and pay a fee of R$10 for the fishermen to make the crossing to Praia do MAM. Returning through the museum is allowed, so you will only need to pay the one-way ticket.

20. Elevador Lacerda (Lacerda Elevator)
The Lacerda Elevator is one of the most famous sights in Salvador. It is difficult for a tourist to get to know Salvador and not take a photo at the top of it, with a view of the All-Saints Bay. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the Lacerda Elevator is a city’s public transport system. It is the first urban elevator in the world. On December 8, 1873, when the first tower opened, it was the tallest elevator in the world at 63 meters.

Outdoor walks
21. Dique do Tororó
Dique do Tororó is the only natural source in the city of Salvador, in the state of Bahia, in Brazil, listed by the National Institute of Artistic and Historical Heritage (Iphan). The lagoon has 110,000 cubic meters of water. Dique do Tororó is one of Salvador’s postcards and very popular with locals. There, you will find tree-lined walkways, jogging tracks, fishing decks, rowing lanes, pedal boats, restaurants, amphitheater, playground and the beautiful sculptures representing the Orixás of Candomblé, signed by the artist Tati Moreno, floating in the water mirror of the lagoon, giving special beauty to the Dike. The lagoon is in front of Arena Fonte Nova. A beautiful walk during the day and especially charming in the late afternoon and evening, when the lagoon lighting is on.

22. Santo Antônio Além do Carmo
Santo Antônio Além do Carmo is the neighborhood that you should reserve the day to visit. Of course, you can stay just one morning or one afternoon, but the options are so many that it’s hard not to want to visit all of them. There, the tourist will find a church, museum, bistros, restaurants, bars, galleries and coffee shops, all in a relaxed and very colorful atmosphere. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Salvador, created in the 17th century. The houses on the west side of the street have a privileged location, as they are perched on the embankment that separates the Upper City from the Lower City in Salvador and have a perfect view of the All-Saints Bay. Go with your camera ready, as the place is super instagrammable and full of sights.

23. Pelourinho
How to talk about the Historic Center and not mention Pelourinho? Largo do Pelourinho and its surroundings are home to a large number of mansions and churches from the 17th and 18th centuries. Some are now museum installations, cultural centers and restaurants. Tomé de Souza Square is home to the Lacerda Elevator, City Hall, Salvador City Council and the Rio Branco Palace, and has a sign with the name of Salvador, perfect for photos. The site also has the Monument to the Fallen Cross (Monumento da Cruz Caída), the Carnival House, the Jorge Amado Foundation and several others. You can decide to just stroll through the historic district, which maintains its structure from when it was created, eat an acarajé (and there are several) and drink the most famous drink in the region, the cravinho, at the bar with the same name. You can still enjoy the parties that happen frequently in Largos Tereza Batista, Quincas Berro and Pedro Arcanjo.

24. Professor Magalhães Neto Avenue
If you are the type of tourist who takes your bicycle, skates or skateboard in your suitcase (or just likes to practice physical exercises with friends and family), be sure to stop by Professor Magalhães Neto Avenue on Sundays and holidays, from 6am to 5pm. On these days, the entire length, in both directions of the road, is closed so that people can enjoy it. As it is a very long and wide avenue, entire families take the street. It is also common for jogging and cycling groups to exercise there. Now, with Jardim dos Namorados all refurbished, the tip is to take a little longer on this leisurely day by going to Vila Jardim dos Namorados and having lunch there, at one of the great restaurant options.

Beaches worth a visit
25. Blue sky, crystal clear sea
If you are a resident or a tourist, you should already know that Salvador is the capital of the Blue Amazon (name of the Brazilian maritime territory). Therefore, be sure to go to Praia do Porto da Barra and Praia do Farol, located in Barra; Praia de Buracão, which is more hidden and is located in Rio Vermelho; Praia da Ribeira, where you can visit the famous Sorveteria da Ribeira (Ribeira Ice Cream Parlor); and also be sure to stop by the beaches of Itapuã. The Suburb of Salvador also has beautiful beaches, such as Praia de Tubarão and Praia de Escada, located in the neighborhoods of the same name, and Praia de São Tomé, which is located in Paripe.
26. Blue Praia Bar
For those who like to be close to the sea, it’s good to call friends to the Blue Praia Bar. With the exuberant view of Praia do Buracão, a hidden corner in the Rio Vermelho neighborhood, the location is perfect for more intimate celebrations. The setting is beautiful, with tables on the porch and lounges by the sea. It has an entrance through the sand, but it is forbidden to enter in bathing suits. The place is super cute and charming, has great service, tasty food and is just a few steps from the sand. If your thing is to stay in the sand, there are also options for tables and large cushions.

27. Barraca do Galego (Galego’s Beach Hut)
Barraca do Galego is one of the most famous in Itapuã and is located in front of the beach, where guests can enjoy the sea breeze. The place has snacks, cold beer and drinks. The beach hut is on the sand, so get your crew together to spend the day at the beach, get that great tan and take a dip in the sea. On Sundays, the space usually receives the largest number of people in search of sun, cold beer and snacks.

28. Barraca do Lôro (Lôro Beach Hut)
For eight years, Barraca do Lôro was the winner of the award for Best Beach Hut in Salvador, granted by Veja Magazine and, twice in a row, it also received the Gula Award in this category. For those who love to spend the day relaxing with family or friends, Barraca do Lôro is located in Itapuã, Stella Maris and Praia do Forte, on the North Coast of Salvador. The beaches are known for their charming look. In addition to the typical foods of Bahia, the customer can enjoy drinks and beers. 29. Pipa Beach Club
Located on Flamengo Beach, the place has an outdoor space inside a coconut grove by the sea. It serves acarajé, fried fish, moqueca, snacks, coconut water, drinks and beer. Religious Tourism
30. Santuário de Santa Dulce dos Pobres (Sanctuary of Saint Dulce of the Poor)
Located in Largo de Roma, the sanctuary is dedicated to Santa Dulce dos Pobres, the first genuinely Brazilian saint. It is there that the relics (a term used to designate the body or part of the body of the blessed or saints) of the Good Angel of Brazil are deposited, in a space called Capela das Relíquias (Chapel of Relics) – a circular room, with triple height, with the tomb that holds the remains of the Mother of the Poor.

31. Igreja do Bonfim (Church of Bonfim)
The Bonfim Church carries the title of one of the most famous in Salvador. It is there that the renowned Lavagem do Bonfim takes place, on the steps of the temple. Built in 1772, the place is a symbol of the Bahian faith. The Church has neoclassical-style architecture and a Rococo façade, following the model of Portuguese churches from the 18th and 19th centuries, with frescoes and tiles.

32. Igreja e Convento de São Francisco (Church and Convent of São Francisco)
Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the Church and Convent of São Francisco are classified as one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World and listed by IPHAN. Its 18th-century Portuguese tiles reproduce the birth of Saint Francis and are adorned with wooden carvings molded with powdered gold and with Brazilian Baroque symbols: leaves, pelicans, flowers and little angels.
