Warmth and ancestry in the Dois de Julho neighborhood

Space brings popular and welcoming elements, such as samba, beans and water from a clay filter

It is a brand-new establishment, but full of ancestry. Bar das Preta, inaugurated on June 5, 2022, is a warm environment, where every detail was designed to bring family memories of home, to generate identification and belonging. There, you will find beans, samba and even clay filter water served in aluminum glass.

At the entrance, the bar has graffiti art of black women, made, of course, by a black woman. There, there is also a sisal curtain and photo mural with mothers, friends and clients of the bar. The space was designed to be a place of cultural fervor, where blacks can have fun, order good food, a cold beer, a drink to cheer up and listen to good music.

“It’s ‘Bar das Preta’ without an ‘S’ because that’s how we talk in everyday life. We say, ‘Os pretos e as preta are all there’. So that’s why we decided to use the name in this more colloquial way”, explains one of the creators of the bar, Thais Nascimento.

Bar das Preta celebrates culture, food, art and music. The space brings memories and habits that your grandmother, mother and aunts worship. Some drinks and foods in the menu were named after the bar employees and members of the establishment’s creators. Others were named with slogans used in everyday life.

“We have a drink named ‘tabaco da leseira’, which is an expression used when a person is very slow. The drink cheers you up” says Thais.

The word, which is used for the person who is slow, who needs to be more active, has variants of this expression, and your mother or grandmother probably says something like that. The drink takes cachaça with utanga, lemon, pineapple and holy grass. A refreshing and strong combination for you to be very excited!

Located in the Dois de Julho neighborhood, the bar has samba every week, including table samba, with black women. The majority audience is composed of black women, mainly from the LGBTQIAPN+ community.

The establishment is a dream of three black women that has come true. The Bar das Preta is owned by Marlene Conceição, Jessica Conceição and Thais Nascimento and everyone who comes to add and celebrate black culture in Salvador. The flagships are feijoada, sarapatel and haggis moqueca. There, there is also Bahian food, sururu broth, kibbeh, plantain moqueca and more.
