On the corner of General Labatut, in front of the Barris Central Library, there is the almost centennial Old Spain (100 years old on November 15, 2018): “One hundred years old, with a body of thirty!” says the description of Velho Espanha Bar and Culture at FaceBook. An old refuge of the last century intellectual groups, the bar reopened in 2017 revering all its history and the people who have been there. Pictures in honor of the old customers Glauber Rocha and Setaro and past carnivals adorn the walls. In the reform project the hardwood ceiling, the hydraulic tile floor and the adobe walls were kept. The touch of modernity was placed in the bar area, without losing the charm of the counter and the beverage shelves.

The outdoor tables, the informal tone, the excellent music and the beers, always very cold and affordable, make Velho Espanha a bar for everyone. The house counts on a gourmet touch of chef Ariadne Maceió in the preparation of the dishes and traditional snacks of boteco. The dishes are named after reference places of downtown. Our suggestions are “Alegria dos Barris”: smoked beef with banana puree, and “Dique do Tororó”: broccoli escondidinho.

Opening hours: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 pm to midnight, Fridays from 3:00 pm to 1:00 am, Saturdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 am and Sundays from 10:00 am to midnight.
