A festival to connect women who run the restaurants in the capital of Bahia

The project has a web series, a culinary exhibition and a digital platform to promote the gastronomic tourist route in Salvador

The cuisine in Bahia is formed by a cultural syncretism of indigenous, African and Portuguese cuisines. The flavors found here are not found anywhere else in the world. In each part of the city, a different story. In every corner of Salvador, we have a new favorite dish. The most interesting thing is to note that each kitchen here is a temple of wisdom, heritage and affection, often led by a woman with such a rich life experience, with recipes passed down from generation to generation, that makes us want to know her trajectory and thus understand the alchemy of those flavors.

Women on Food, an international alliance aiming to connect, train and educate women who are transforming gastronomy around the world, together with Visit Salvador da Bahia, is bringing together women chefs who run a kitchen in Salvador.

The Donas do Sabor Festival (Owners of Flavor) is a project of the City of Salvador, through the Department of Culture and Tourism (SECULT), in partnership with Women on Food, with support from the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (ABRASEL) and Shopping Barra. The objective is to promote the touristic gastronomic route in Salvador and attract national and international visitors through the women who dominate one of the most important pillars of the city’s culture: gastronomy.

During the month of November, the Festival will have some developments, with several actions for the formation of a large network of women entrepreneurs, chefs and/or who run a restaurant in Salvador. The first phase is the opening of entries for chefs and restaurants here on the portal at this link. Phase two comprises a five-episode webseries and phase three, a Culinary Show at Shopping Barra.

All episodes of the webseries will be available on Youtube, on the Visit Salvador da Bahia channel. The news from each phase of the Donas do Sabor Festival will be published on the website salvadordabahia.com and on Instagram @visitsalvadordabahia, Facebook and Twitter.

Digital platform

What if there was a place where we could access all the restaurants and creations of women chefs across town? This is exactly the main pillar of the Donas do Sabor Festival. A special section was created on the SalvadorDaBahia.com portal featuring all selected chefs and sharing experiences around the gastronomic route of Salvador.

Women On Food and Visit Salvador da Bahia mapped representative women of the gastronomic area of Salvador. Interested parties must enter the portal, submit their gastronomy story, present a dish to be highlighted at the festival, in addition to providing contact information, address, social networks and photos of the restaurant, the participant and the chosen dish.

Any enterprising woman who runs a restaurant in the city and/or is a chef can register to participate in the festival directly on the Visit Salvador da Bahia portal. Those chosen will win the Donas do Sabor Seal. The physical seal will be awarded to restaurants, indicating that the place is run by a woman and is part of the Donas do Sabor Festival.

To participate in this project, which unites gastronomy and experiences in the city, interested parties must register for the festival through this link.

The webseries

Another point of the festival is the Donas do Sabor webseries, launched on November 5th. In five episodes, it shows the power of women in Bahian cuisine, with meetings that always feature a great pair of chefs.
Donas do Sabor ambassadors are: Déa Nascimento (Solar Gastronomia), Ana Célia (Zanzibar), Tereza Paim (Casa de Tereza), Deliene Mota (Encantos Da Maré), Angeluci Figueiredo (Restaurante Preta), Dona Jô (Cantinho da Jô ), Angélica Moreira (Ajeum da Diáspora), Nara Amaral (Di Janela), Neinha (Neinha Point do Camarão) and Leila Carreiro (Dona Mariquita).

They will meet together to create or reinterpret a dish that will be part of the Festival’s Special Menu. In addition to everything that happens in the kitchen, they will tell a little about their history with cuisine and their relationship with the city and take the public to know what happens behind gastronomy, through the suppliers that feed the chain. The series will also show their restaurants and the region of the city where they are located. The meetings were recorded in the beautiful kitchen of Pousada do Boqueirão, in Santo Antônio Além do Carmo.

The purpose of these ambassadors’ participation in the Festival is to inspire other women to also show their dishes and their restaurants to the general public by registering on the Visit Salvador da Bahia website.

Cooking show

For the project, a concept restaurant will be created and open to the public in the gourmet area of Shopping Barra, starting on November 10th.

The place promises to become a meeting point for the Donas do Sabor Festival. The ambassadors will be present both on the launch day, as well as at different times during the month of November, promoting their cuisine and the festival to the entire city. Televisions will be installed on site showing episodes of the web series.

The Special Menu will be set up with dishes presented by the pairs of chefs in the webseries. These dishes will be on sale at the concept restaurant. The kitchen will be led by the partners Elaine Hazin, Paula Bandeira and Paula Hazin from “Mãe” restaurant, located in two addresses, one in Cidade da Música da Bahia (Museum of Music), and the other in Casa do Carnaval. The restaurants that already exist in the Gourmet Area and in the Shopping Barra food court will also be mobilizing and moving the festival.

Food is a material heritage. Gastronomy is extremely important for tourism, as it is among the three main factors in choosing a destination. This project talks about you who cook brilliantly, your most popular recipe, your venture, and your history. We want to meet you, owner of flavor.
